Interesting Facts About Dublin Ireland

Vacation Spots in Dublin
Statue of Molly Malone
Originally founded as a small Viking settlement, Dublin has one of the fastest growing populations of any European city. The Irish are famous for their love of language, culture, sports and passion for life. Sightseeing in Dublin is memorable, and I'll get to that soon, but even more memorable are the people you'll meet, warm, friendly and interested in meeting you.
The pub, or public house, is a national institution, the center of Irish social life, for live music, gossip, a hot meal, storytelling and a foaming pint. There really is a pub on every corner. Drop in and join the fun, the chat, the merriment and the music. That's where you'll find the heart of Ireland.
Dubliners are obsessed with sports. Football and hurling are the national pastimes, with lots of interest in rugby, soccer, horse racing and cricket. The emerald green golf courses draw tourists on golfing excursions.

Video: Molly Malone, performed by the Dubliners
Here on Grafton Street, the statue of Molly Malone with her fish cart keeps alive the legend of a beautiful 17th century street peddler who died young. Locals call it "the tart with the cart." The song Molly Malone, also known as "Cockles and Mussels" or "In Dublin's Fair City" has become the unofficial anthem of Dublin City. The song goes like this, in a performance of the Dubliners.
In Dublin's fair city,
where the girls are so pretty,
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone,
As she wheeled her wheel-barrow,
Through streets broad and narrow,
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!"
(Chorus)"Alive, alive, oh,
Alive, alive, oh",
Crying "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh".
She was a fishmonger,
But sure 'twas no wonder,
For so were her father and mother before,
And they each wheeled their barrow,
Through streets broad and narrow,
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!"
She died of a fever,
And no one could save her,
And that was the end of sweet Molly Malone.
Now her ghost wheels her barrow,
Through streets broad and narrow,
Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!"
